The National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Tokyo is Japan’s premier computer‑science research institute across different research areas. Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Göttingen, master’s students and PhD candidates can conduct paid research internships or master’s thesis projects in Tokyo. The GippLab cooperates with NII to offer research stays lasting two to six months, funded by the NII and DAAD. Recent calls from NII have application deadlines in April (spring call) and October (autumn call); applicants must be nominated by their home institution.

We will host a free info session on Wednesday, 12 November 2025, 12:00–14:00 (CET) at the Informatik‑Provisorium, Room 0.102. In this info session, we will cover:

  • What is NII? – an overview of NII and its world‑leading research areas.
  • Eligibility & funding: opportunities for master’s students, PhD candidates, and postdocs, typical internship durations (2–6 months), and compensation.
  • Application process: how to select projects, prepare documents, and meet the upcoming spring deadline.
  • Additional support: DAAD funding for travel costs and practical tips for living in Tokyo.
  • Experience report: insights from previous interns with plenty of pictures.

Everyone interested in research staying in Japan is welcome, especially students from Computer Science, Data Science, and related disciplines. Please save the date and spread the word!
